Powerful, but not (as durable as) your mother's vacuum.
UPDATE: WOULD REDUCE TO 2 STARS. At no charge, the manufacturer sent a replacement cover to correct the broken rivet. The customer service was good. They suggested bending the wheel into place to straighten the Now, however, 17 months after purchase, the electric power nozzle does not turn on. This follows on several weeks of the nozzle turning on and off intermittently. Now I wish I had purchased the vacuum from a physical store with a buyer protection program. My new strategy is to buy cheap vacuums on a buyer protection plan and get the broken parts replaced. This was way too expensive for the grief.

ORIGINAL: I bought this because I was tired of the expensive, plastic vacuums falling apart within the first year of use. While this vacuum is incredibly powerful (indeed it sucks the area rugs right off the floor) it's not the indestructible stainless steel canister vacuum of my childhood. I bought this vacuum for a few reasons:
1) All the brand name vacuums listed on consumer reports have user reviews that said the vacuums were not that good
2) the user reviews for this vacuum were much higher, albeit fewer people, but I looked at both models too.
3) The reviews of this vacuum made it sound like it was amazing

While I will say this IS a good vacuum, it does not live up to the hype and quite frankly lacks some key modern features or has some poor quality aspects
1) The cord just hangs out there with no place to go. You can wrap it around the body but that is a pain in the @$$.
2) The spare attachments hang onto a flimsy plastic carrier that poorly snaps onto the vacuum tube/pole

We just opened the box. It took all of 5 minutes to put it together. First thing I checked was the suction. It was great. Two negatives, no auto cord recoil and the exhaust is loud. It is well built, glides nicely along the floor, comes with all the accessories, including two extra chrome metal wands, has a powerful rug beater and the bare floor nozzle has great bristles. It is light weight so it is easy to carry up the stairs and makes it OK to clean the stairs, although I wish the hose was longer. We have had all types of vacuums, Oreck upright, sharp canister, Hoover canister, shop vacs, etc. After all is said and done, when you get right down to it, you have to use a canister vac if you want to really clean. It allows you to get the dirt and dust in those hard to reach places and an upright is simply not going to cut it. We looked at all the vacs, Electrolux, Dyson, Eureka, Kenmore, Bla, Bla, Bla, Ba Bla. Based on price, performance, ease of use, durability and good old SUCTION!,...

Finally, A Real "Old School", Vacuum Cleaner!
The vast majority of vacuums on the market today are poor substitutes for the "old school" models that gained fame in the 1950's and 60's. Mostly Plastic, cheaply made, and never doing the job good enough, most vacuums today do just enough to get by. This unit by Metropolitan not only pays homage to those legendary cannister vacs of the 1950's, but it actually cleans like them! This vac actually is powerful enough, to suck up, anything it touches, so it not only picks up the deepest dirt, and dust, but if you're not careful, it'll also devour socks, coins, paper, and other small items! This is the type of concentrated, sustained, sucking power, lacking in most contemporary units. With it's mulitiple filtration, quiet operation, and lightweight, this vacuum is a joy to operate. The need to buy filters and bags may be construed as a negative, but in reality, it's a reasonable trade-off, for the true "old school" cleaning power, this unit delivers.

Pleased customer!
This is by far the best vacuum I have owned, and I've had several Hoovers, an Electrolux and most recently an Oreck. This machine actually picks up dog hair! It's so nice to feel like you're really cleaning the floors, not simply running over them. I'd buy it again!

This is the best vacuum I have ever used! Don't be stupid like me and get just the basic model, though...make sure you get the power nozzle!!! I have two cats and a German shepherd...don't know what I was thinking. This vac is so powerful and amazingly lightweight. If you live in a house that is shaped like a rocket like I do...all stairs and no depth... you need this vacuum. I think it does a better job than my daughter's Dyson and the lightweight feature is the whip! I'm only 5' tall and find it nearly impossible to drag that heavy-butt upright up and down all these stairs, but the metro vac is totally portable and easy to use. Comes with an arsenal of attachments. I guess the only disadvantage is the fact that now I have to buy bags again instead of the dirtcup, but now no dust escapes when I empty it like it did with the big upright. Best vacuum we've ever owned
We have been using the vacuum for 3-4 months now, and we love it! Our home is 90% hardwood floors and this vacuum is perfect. It is great on stairs, has excellent suction power, and was worth ever penny. No more tugging around our little tank vac or trying to clean the wood floors with our upright. The bag is very easy to clean and the filter seems to trap every last spec of dust. I'm not sure how well this would perform on deep carpet, but we use it on some low pile floor mats and it does great. The bottom line is after owning this we don't want any other vacuum.

Best Ever. C2401-010 (the 010 is VERY important!)
If you have largely hard wood floors with the occasional area rug, just buy it. Don't think about it. Just buy it.
I run a cleaning business in Oregon where absolutely everyone has hardwood floors and area rugs. This thing is a breeze and makes short work of large areas. I use to have some complaints about it, but have gotten over them by making a few changes in the way I use it. Once you are nice to your vacuum, it will be nice to you.

Here is a list of why this is the greatest vacuum you will ever own and why you will want to buy it for all your friends and family:

1) small and light weight. At Green Clean Queen (my cleaning business) we are all pretty petite women. As long as you aren't stupid, wear at least the waist strap (those with large busts find the chest strap just makes things uncomfortable, but it's not that necessary anyway), and stand up straight, it will not hurt your back. Really. "W.O.W." It's on the side of the vacuum 'Wear right. Operate...
Not as nice as I hoped
I've been wanting to buy a backpack vacuum for a few years now. So this year, I decided to give it a try. Our house it 90% hardwood so a backpack vacuum makes a lot of sense. Unfortunately, in actual use, it wasn't as nice as I had hoped.

PROS
- not having to drag anything around on the floor is VERY nice.
- the hose hangs down from your back so when you let go of the wand (e.g. while moving furniture), it's easy to pick the wand back up.
- the curved plastic piece at the end of the hose is handy (e.g. for cleaning the tops of baseboards).
- long extension cord.

CONS
- awkward to put on & wear. Of course, putting it on only takes a few seconds, but you still have to deal with backpack straps and a tight waist band while you're moving around.
- weight: 10 lbs doesn't seem like a lot, but it was too unwieldy for my wife and kids to use for more than a few minutes.
- heat: I tried it out in the winter and it got fairly hot. I think...

The Little Vac that Could!! - Powerful & Lightweight
Purchase requirements - Small - Lightweight - Powerful - Quiet - Long Hose

1.) Small - when I first received my shipment, I was a bit taken aback. The Box was 4'x2'x 1-1/2'. Gosh it was huge and a bit heavy (for a vac). Slowly I opened the package to find another box. A bit relieved, the size seemed a bit more appropriate. I quickly opened the box to find another box. Now we are talking - once this box was opened, I saw what I wanted - a small, good looking, lightweight vac! The Stainless Steel did give the vac a professional appearance.

2.) Lightweight - Definitely meets the bill. No larger in width and length than my keyboard, there will be no problem moving this vac about.

3.) Powerful - I didn't expect much from all the claims (4 horsepower and 95" of waterlift), but this little vac made me a believer in power. This is the first time I only needed to use the crevice tool for awkward corners. Those little pieces of fuzz and hairs that usually...

Great suction but minor design flaw

This little vac has terrific suction, better than any cannister I know of. Unfortunately, there are 2 minor design problems. First, there is no catch or hook that keeps the hose attached to the body. I must have pulled it out 10 times doing one small house. All it needs is a simple twist catch or such. Second,there is no comfortable place for your hand holding the thing. The hose attaches to the smooth part that the attachments go in, but that is right where you need to hold it, so you are holding the hose which isnt comfortable. Don't manufacturers EVER use their own products?? These things should not have been missed from a company that's been around forever. It sure did a good job vacuuming though - hope they fix these things.

Works like a champ, exactly as described. I did end up having to buy the power carpet head from the company( who were very nice and it arrived promptly) My only grip is how small the vacuum bag is, if you have a large house or lots of pets, you really have to keep an eye on it...it fills up quick . On the whole, I am very pleased. The cloth bag works very well and is easy to rinse out, drys quickly. I would recommend it to any one especially if you have a small house or trailer and not a lot of storage room. It has plenty of power and is light to carry. The body does get quite warm since there is no plastic shielding, I called the company about this and they explained that as it is all metal and not insulated this is normal.

Finally, A Real "Old School", Vacuum Cleaner!
The vast majority of vacuums on the market today are poor substitutes for the "old school" models that gained fame in the 1950's and 60's. Mostly Plastic, cheaply made, and never doing the job good enough, most vacuums today do just enough to get by. This unit by Metropolitan not only pays homage to those legendary cannister vacs of the 1950's, but it actually cleans like them! This vac actually is powerful enough, to suck up, anything it touches, so it not only picks up the deepest dirt, and dust, but if you're not careful, it'll also devour socks, coins, paper, and other small items! This is the type of concentrated, sustained, sucking power, lacking in most contemporary units. With it's mulitiple filtration, quiet operation, and lightweight, this vacuum is a joy to operate. The need to buy filters and bags may be construed as a negative, but in reality, it's a reasonable trade-off, for the true "old school" cleaning power, this unit delivers.

Pleased customer!
This is by far the best vacuum I have owned, and I've had several Hoovers, an Electrolux and most recently an Oreck. This machine actually picks up dog hair! It's so nice to feel like you're really cleaning the floors, not simply running over them. I'd buy it again!
metro vad adm-4sf 11.25 amp 4 HP canister vac
This is the best vacuum I have ever used! Don't be stupid like me and get just the basic model, though...make sure you get the power nozzle!!! I have two cats and a German shepherd...don't know what I was thinking. This vac is so powerful and amazingly lightweight. If you live in a house that is shaped like a rocket like I do...all stairs and no depth... you need this vacuum. I think it does a better job than my daughter's Dyson and the lightweight feature is the whip! I'm only 5' tall and find it nearly impossible to drag that heavy-butt upright up and down all these stairs, but the metro vac is totally portable and easy to use. Comes with an arsenal of attachments. I guess the only disadvantage is the fact that now I have to buy bags again instead of the dirtcup, but now no dust escapes when I empty it like it did with the big upright. The Little Vac that Could!! - Powerful & Lightweight
Purchase requirements - Small - Lightweight - Powerful - Quiet - Long Hose

1.) Small - when I first received my shipment, I was a bit taken aback. The Box was 4'x2'x 1-1/2'. Gosh it was huge and a bit heavy (for a vac). Slowly I opened the package to find another box. A bit relieved, the size seemed a bit more appropriate. I quickly opened the box to find another box. Now we are talking - once this box was opened, I saw what I wanted - a small, good looking, lightweight vac! The Stainless Steel did give the vac a professional appearance.

2.) Lightweight - Definitely meets the bill. No larger in width and length than my keyboard, there will be no problem moving this vac about.

3.) Powerful - I didn't expect much from all the claims (4 horsepower and 95" of waterlift), but this little vac made me a believer in power. This is the first time I only needed to use the crevice tool for awkward corners. Those little pieces of fuzz and hairs that usually...

Great suction but minor design flaw
Metropolitan Professionals ADM-4PNHSF 13 Amp 4 Horsepower Canister Vacuum with Quadruple Hepa Filtration and Electric Power Nozzle

This little vac has terrific suction, better than any cannister I know of. Unfortunately, there are 2 minor design problems. First, there is no catch or hook that keeps the hose attached to the body. I must have pulled it out 10 times doing one small house. All it needs is a simple twist catch or such. Second,there is no comfortable place for your hand holding the thing. The hose attaches to the smooth part that the attachments go in, but that is right where you need to hold it, so you are holding the hose which isnt comfortable. Don't manufacturers EVER use their own products?? These things should not have been missed from a company that's been around forever. It sure did a good job vacuuming though - hope they fix these things.
Metro vacuum cleaner
Works like a champ, exactly as described. I did end up having to buy the power carpet head from the company( who were very nice and it arrived promptly) My only grip is how small the vacuum bag is, if you have a large house or lots of pets, you really have to keep an eye on it...it fills up quick . On the whole, I am very pleased. The cloth bag works very well and is easy to rinse out, drys quickly. I would recommend it to any one especially if you have a small house or trailer and not a lot of storage room. It has plenty of power and is light to carry. The body does get quite warm since there is no plastic shielding, I called the company about this and they explained that as it is all metal and not insulated this is normal.

Best vacuum we've ever owned
We have been using the vacuum for 3-4 months now, and we love it! Our home is 90% hardwood floors and this vacuum is perfect. It is great on stairs, has excellent suction power, and was worth ever penny. No more tugging around our little tank vac or trying to clean the wood floors with our upright. The bag is very easy to clean and the filter seems to trap every last spec of dust. I'm not sure how well this would perform on deep carpet, but we use it on some low pile floor mats and it does great. The bottom line is after owning this we don't want any other vacuum.

Best Ever. C2401-010 (the 010 is VERY important!)
If you have largely hard wood floors with the occasional area rug, just buy it. Don't think about it. Just buy it.
I run a cleaning business in Oregon where absolutely everyone has hardwood floors and area rugs. This thing is a breeze and makes short work of large areas. I use to have some complaints about it, but have gotten over them by making a few changes in the way I use it. Once you are nice to your vacuum, it will be nice to you.

Here is a list of why this is the greatest vacuum you will ever own and why you will want to buy it for all your friends and family:

1) small and light weight. At Green Clean Queen (my cleaning business) we are all pretty petite women. As long as you aren't stupid, wear at least the waist strap (those with large busts find the chest strap just makes things uncomfortable, but it's not that necessary anyway), and stand up straight, it will not hurt your back. Really. "W.O.W." It's on the side of the vacuum 'Wear right. Operate...
Not as nice as I hoped
I've been wanting to buy a backpack vacuum for a few years now. So this year, I decided to give it a try. Our house it 90% hardwood so a backpack vacuum makes a lot of sense. Unfortunately, in actual use, it wasn't as nice as I had hoped.

PROS
- not having to drag anything around on the floor is VERY nice.
- the hose hangs down from your back so when you let go of the wand (e.g. while moving furniture), it's easy to pick the wand back up.
- the curved plastic piece at the end of the hose is handy (e.g. for cleaning the tops of baseboards).
- long extension cord.

CONS
- awkward to put on & wear. Of course, putting it on only takes a few seconds, but you still have to deal with backpack straps and a tight waist band while you're moving around.
- weight: 10 lbs doesn't seem like a lot, but it was too unwieldy for my wife and kids to use for more than a few minutes.
- heat: I tried it out in the winter and it got fairly hot. I think...
