Excellent on bare floors. I'm not recommending it for carpets. This is the smartest bagless design I've seen; I didn't think I'd find a bagless I liked. Moreover, bagless is overrated because bags aren't much of an inconvenience at all. I researched on line and visited all the stores. Bed Bath & Beyond had this vac for the same price as Amazon- plus I could plug it in there and try it out for real.
Picks: Good dirt-collecting design for a bagless. Light weight. Good suction. Clever wand design detaches from the body for reaching awkward areas.
Pans: Cord is a little short. A little weak at the edge where the wall meets the floor.
This thing picks up cheerios and pet hair, paper clips, staples and anything else I don't want my baby to eat off the floor. It is used daily. The carpet brush is capable of picking up tracked-in debris on the large entry rugs and low pile area rugs. IMO it is too light to be effective on thick pile carpets- even on low pile it...

My wife and I purchased this vacuum mainly because it is lightweight and the reviews stated it doesn't loose suction. After using it for about a month of, it comes through on both fronts. It is easy to maneuver on the stairs, lightweight enough to lift up and down the stairs, and all the while not needing to be emptied often. It has functional features and is less expensive than a Dyson. Overall, a great vacuum and well worth the money.

It has surprisingly powerful suction for such a compact unit & I even bypassed the Navigator Lift Away (which I planned to get) in favor of this one because I liked how it performed even better than the Lift Away despite its smaller size. It lifts up the nap on my trampled carpets & makes them look new again. This vacuum pulls out so much dirt, dust, hair & fibers from my carpets that my old canister vacuum left behind. The beater brush (which has a button to turn off for use on bare floors) is fantastic.

The dirt cup is large enough capacity for my apt (2 bdrm, no stairs), it empties out easily, & the filter needs only occasional rinsing (every 3 mos of regular use) to maintain its wonderful strong suction. The hose is convertible & comes w/2 attachments which store on the...

Mostly Junk: Nice Idea, Poor Implementation
First of all, doesn't it seem strange (and marginally ethical) that many of the positive reviews are authored by Shark "Ambassadors"? Do they receive their units for free and then post (mostly) positive ratings. I wonder...

Regarding my experience: This unit is light and easy to use, but I found it poorly implemented, fragile and not well constructed. By their nature, vacuums see a bit of rough use. The first thing to fail was the cleverly designed power/rotary brush. This is the best attachment and it jammed after a few minutes of use; fixing it required 15 minutes+ of troubleshooting (the manual was marginally helpful) to remove some small debris. This experience repeated itself to the point where it rendered this attachment practically useless (although I reduced my down-time to several minutes per incident as I gained experience and expertise with this issue). Then, with a bit more use, the hose tore off, rendering the entire unit useless. Can not recommend it, feel...

Perfect for all of the other vacuum needs I have
I have a Dyson. It is "great", whatever. I needed a vacuum that I could easily get cobwebs, dog hair in corners and dust on floor trim, etc. This is really handy. Yes, my Dyson could also do all of that, BUT that means that I'd have to lug the thing around and fight the limited hose and so on. This is a handy vacuum in that I can "drag" it behind or I can throw it over my shoulder and move easily from one task to the next. I am by NO means a good housekeeper, but this vacuum from Shark makes it fun for me and that is half the battle. Oh, and I LOVE the "motorized" brush attachment. It gets the dog hair off of my microfiber and regular fiber sofas with ease. With that, it is FAR superior to my Dyson when I was using it for that task. Right now they are $80 at Costco. I do not use the accessory caddy.

Most powerful, light and versatile upright I've ever owned- LOVE IT!
I bought this in 2010 and it really is what I've been looking for in an upright for years! I come from a Hoover Windtunnel that weighs ~ 23lbs and was killing me. I have carpeted stairs, so wanted a lift-off type upright but the Hoover model is too heavy. Then I saw the Shark infomercial. They always have such clever designs but their cordless vac reviews are so bad, I had to check reviews online before I bought this. They clearly are much better at making plug-in vacs over cordless re-chargeables because this one is a keeper! It makes vacuuming kinda fun :)

I purchased this vacuum about 6 mos. ago in search of replacing my Bissell Pet Hair Removal vacuum. I wanted to wait in submitting this review until I had used the Shark for a fair amount of time. I had initially purchased the Bissell Pet Hair vacuum to help me with the carpet and carpeted stairs in my home. We have two dogs, a Min Pin and a yellow Lab, so the dog hair has various sizes and colors. Our house is carpeted almost throughout (except the tiled kitchen and entryway) in a dark forest green carpet. You can imagine how quickly and easily the yellow Lab hair shows on this dark carpet. I found the Bissell to be heavy and almost impossible to deal with on the stairs. The removable attachment hose was always detaching somewhere, while I was trying to use it on the stairs (either the pet attachment from the extension piece, or the extension piece from the flexible hose, or the flexible hose from the sweeper body. The vacuum arrived and was easy to put together with just a few clicks, no tools required. This vacuum works magic on pet hair. We have a long haired cat that sheds all over the place. Excellent on carpet and pet hair
I did a LOT of research and himming and hawing before finally buying this vacuum. I had owned a Dyson bagless a few years ago and got rid of it because dumping the canister was a hassle. I was wary about getting another bagless vacuum, but I also hate it when I run out of bags and with a Siberian Husky, well, you vacuum a lot! So, for $99 I figured you can't go wrong with this one, and if I didn't like it, back it goes. So far, so good. I have a little throw rug near the door that with my old vacuum it just sort of looked okay, and I had been thinking I would have to shampoo it or just get a new one. A few passes with the Navigator and that carpet sparkles again, really looks brand new! On my main carpet, this vacuum gets it fluffy and like new; it is fun to walk around on truly clean carpeting. It seems a bit easier to dump the canister on this one, but it still can get tricky if you let it get too full of dog hair before dumping. I wasn't sure about the narrow head of...

Initial impression
I just bought the vacuum yesterday from Costco. Setup is easy. I did it without the manual, that is a rarity for me. I used it to vacuum the old carpet which I just did two days ago with another vacuum cleaner. Dirt showed up in the transparent plastic container immediately and I kept going till 1/3 of the container was full. It was amazing. My wife commented when she came back from work " Look the carpet is much cleaner". Then I check the internet for the review. Many people lodged complaints concerning durability.

I dropped the dirt in the trashcan, rinsed the entire dirt container under the faucet (since it is so small) dried it and studied it to see what caused all the complaints.

The motor run very quite reminding me of a well oiled ball bearing motor - may be it is. The motor is strong. And since there is no high low adjustment feature, the brush scraps my old carpet digging up the old dirt inside the pores. I found the vacuum actually walks on its own...
I love my new Navigator Light Vacumn! I was amazed...
I have a Dyson Animal vacumn & its supposed to be the very best they offer & it was $500. It's not as good as I thought it would be.. I have had it for a few years and I raise small birds & small dogs.. so there is alot of bird seed & dander.. plus we have 10 Dachshunds under foot.. so I vacumn 2x a day at least. The Dyson gets clogged up alot. I have had numurous problems with it after about a year. I wish I had purchased it at Costco - because I would take it back. Well built, unique design, excellent features but can't stand on it's own, hard to use on tall carpet.

So I ran into an odd problem. I had rinsed and air-dried the foam filter a couple times by now as I don't like seeing dirt build up. But at some point there was a terrible mildew odor coming out the whole vacuum. It smelled like someone had vacuumed up a nasty wet basement flood. It was so bad I had to return it. I like this vacuum and I think it's cleaning power is designed like a well tuned jet engine vs lawn mower-like vacuums (ie PAWS wind-tunnel hoover is all plastic, cheap feeling, has a terribly short hose, and the brush kicks dust around faster than the vacuum can collect it...itchy throat). I would get a replacement shark because of its quality but be more cautious about washing the filter by throwing it in the dryer instead of air drying. If you don't push air through the large foam filter daily, I imagine any trapped moisture and mildew in it will develop very quickly. Also, don't bother cleaning the filter out until it actually affects...

STRONG Powerful High Quality vacuum...
Poop... I missed a sale price on this Item by three days at Costco ($119)! I picked it up today (9/12/2012) for their normal $149 price (+$9 tax)= $158. I couldn't decide if I wanted the newer fancier Shark NV356E model that separates from the bottom brush unit. Or this 420 unit (mostly sold only at Costco). My decision delay cost me $30.

The 420 unit does not separate from its base. But, its collapsible hose is much longer when fully extended than the NV356E and its tank is much larger than the NV356E. Due to the longer hose, you don't need to separate the tank from the base like the NV356E. The NV356E has a smaller tank. I was leaning toward the NV356E. Until I read about the 420 on another Amazon forum.

I'm glad That I got the 420. These Shark vacuums suck so strong that you will fill up the tank several times while vacuuming your home. You need the bigger tank IMHO to avoid several trips to the garage garbage can.

Got this on sale at Costco for $119. Put it together fairly easily - be sure to read the instructions to keep things simple.

Excellent suction. We happen to like the swivel action on the power floor nozzle. We tried the attachments and they worked well. Switching back and forth from attachments to main vacuum was quick and easy. Like how the attachments are all on-board, except for the pet hair brush which is too big to keep on-board. Especially will be using the pet hair power brush a lot as we have two indoor cats and a dog. Our couch came out looking like new after using the pet hair brush. Even the cat tree looks tons better. We couldn't believe all the dirt and hair in the dust cup, as we had just vacuumed two days ago! This vacuum really, well, vacuums well!

So I ran into an odd problem. I had rinsed and air-dried the foam filter a couple times by now as I don't like seeing dirt build up. But at some point there was a terrible mildew odor coming out the whole vacuum. It smelled like someone had vacuumed up a nasty wet basement flood. It was so bad I had to return it. I like this vacuum and I think it's cleaning power is designed like a well tuned jet engine vs lawn mower-like vacuums (ie PAWS wind-tunnel hoover is all plastic, cheap feeling, has a terribly short hose, and the brush kicks dust around faster than the vacuum can collect it...itchy throat). I would get a replacement shark because of its quality but be more cautious about washing the filter by throwing it in the dryer instead of air drying. If you don't push air through the large foam filter daily, I imagine any trapped moisture and mildew in it will develop very quickly. Also, don't bother cleaning the filter out until it actually affects...

STRONG Powerful High Quality vacuum...
Poop... I missed a sale price on this Item by three days at Costco ($119)! I picked it up today (9/12/2012) for their normal $149 price (+$9 tax)= $158. I couldn't decide if I wanted the newer fancier Shark NV356E model that separates from the bottom brush unit. Or this 420 unit (mostly sold only at Costco). My decision delay cost me $30.

The 420 unit does not separate from its base. But, its collapsible hose is much longer when fully extended than the NV356E and its tank is much larger than the NV356E. Due to the longer hose, you don't need to separate the tank from the base like the NV356E. The NV356E has a smaller tank. I was leaning toward the NV356E. Until I read about the 420 on another Amazon forum.

I'm glad That I got the 420. These Shark vacuums suck so strong that you will fill up the tank several times while vacuuming your home. You need the bigger tank IMHO to avoid several trips to the garage garbage can.

Got this on sale at Costco for $119. Put it together fairly easily - be sure to read the instructions to keep things simple.

Excellent suction. We happen to like the swivel action on the power floor nozzle. We tried the attachments and they worked well. Switching back and forth from attachments to main vacuum was quick and easy. Like how the attachments are all on-board, except for the pet hair brush which is too big to keep on-board. Especially will be using the pet hair power brush a lot as we have two indoor cats and a dog. Our couch came out looking like new after using the pet hair brush. Even the cat tree looks tons better. We couldn't believe all the dirt and hair in the dust cup, as we had just vacuumed two days ago! This vacuum really, well, vacuums well!

The best vacuum for any money!
I am not one to leave reviews, i normally just read what others say. But right now my friends and neighbors look at me funny when I start talking about my new vacuum because I can't stop with the accolades. I did read reviews on this vacuum, but they do not do it justice, this is a bada$$ piece of machinery. I have medium pyle carpet, and I can turn the brush off and it still pulls at the carpet! When you turn the brush on, it almost feels self propelled as the brush pulls it forward. I caught the end of a scarf(by mistake) and it sucked the entire thing into the hose before the brush shut off- looked like a cartoon it was so fast! with the canister 3/4 full, it still picked up loose cat litter and pet food. My carpet did not look dirty, but the first 5 feet I went back & forth I went over twice filled the canister a quarter of the way. My carpet runners have never been so clean, they look refreshed, newer even. My 20 yr old son commented on how much better our carpet looked and...

AMAZING!
I love this. I am expecting my first baby and have become insane about cleaning. I wanted a new vacuum because the pet hair mine seamed to be leaving on the carpet. I looked at reviews all over. I debated between this and dyson. This was way more affordable so I decided to give it a shot.

I put this together in a flash(pregnant)It seamed a little "cheep" So I was kinda worried about the parts being flimsy. So far they are not, its just very light weight.

I wanted to do a test and see how good it was.(crazy prego mind I vacuumed part of my carpet with my old vacuum. I emptied the content of the old on a paper. Then I vacuumed the same swatch of Capet with my new shark. First thing I noticed was how easy it was for me to maneuver at 38weeks pregnant. Then I dumped the content of this vacuum on the paper to compare what had been lifted. I was amazed.

First the pile of dirt was about 4-5times larger than the pile from my old vacuum...

Excellent on carpet and pet hair
I did a LOT of research and himming and hawing before finally buying this vacuum. I had owned a Dyson bagless a few years ago and got rid of it because dumping the canister was a hassle. I was wary about getting another bagless vacuum, but I also hate it when I run out of bags and with a Siberian Husky, well, you vacuum a lot! So, for $99 I figured you can't go wrong with this one, and if I didn't like it, back it goes. So far, so good. I have a little throw rug near the door that with my old vacuum it just sort of looked okay, and I had been thinking I would have to shampoo it or just get a new one. A few passes with the Navigator and that carpet sparkles again, really looks brand new! On my main carpet, this vacuum gets it fluffy and like new; it is fun to walk around on truly clean carpeting. It seems a bit easier to dump the canister on this one, but it still can get tricky if you let it get too full of dog hair before dumping. I wasn't sure about the narrow head of...

Initial impression
I just bought the vacuum yesterday from Costco. Setup is easy. I did it without the manual, that is a rarity for me. I used it to vacuum the old carpet which I just did two days ago with another vacuum cleaner. Dirt showed up in the transparent plastic container immediately and I kept going till 1/3 of the container was full. It was amazing. My wife commented when she came back from work " Look the carpet is much cleaner". Then I check the internet for the review. Many people lodged complaints concerning durability.

I dropped the dirt in the trashcan, rinsed the entire dirt container under the faucet (since it is so small) dried it and studied it to see what caused all the complaints.

The motor run very quite reminding me of a well oiled ball bearing motor - may be it is. The motor is strong. And since there is no high low adjustment feature, the brush scraps my old carpet digging up the old dirt inside the pores. I found the vacuum actually walks on its own...
I love my new Navigator Light Vacumn! I was amazed...
I have a Dyson Animal vacumn & its supposed to be the very best they offer & it was $500. It's not as good as I thought it would be.. I have had it for a few years and I raise small birds & small dogs.. so there is alot of bird seed & dander.. plus we have 10 Dachshunds under foot.. so I vacumn 2x a day at least. The Dyson gets clogged up alot. I have had numurous problems with it after about a year. I wish I had purchased it at Costco - because I would take it back.
